Meet the Speaker

Where were you born?

New Zealand.

What other jobs have you had?

Quite a few weird ones: over the years I was a professional vampire at Dracula’s Cabaret, a fireplace salesman, a podcaster, a journalist and, of course, a waiter.

What themes are recurring in your work?

I write a lot about the past and how people struggle to either move beyond or face up to it. I’m also fascinated by the power and meaning of art, the way that we change over time (for better or worse), the complexities of friendship and the murky line between good and evil.

What have been the highlights of your career?

My first massive career highlight was winning the Sir Peter Ustinov Television Scriptwriting Award in 2015. It meant I got to go to the International Emmys, walk the red carpet and meet some really amazing people. After that, I’ve been lucky to have had quite a few. The publication of my first novel, Boone Shepard, in 2016. The moment I found out HarperCollins were going to publish The Hunted. Going to LA to meet all the people behind the film adaptation. Every time I walk into a bookshop and see something I’ve written on the shelves.

Where have your works been published?

My first three books, the Boone Shepard Trilogy, were published by independent publisher Bell Frog Books. Since then, HarperCollins have acquired my first adult novel The Hunted and its sequel, along with my new YA writing. I’ve also written for The Guardian, The Age, The Herald Sun, Den of Geek and more.

What are you passionate about?

More than anything else, stories. Whether I’m reading them, watching them, writing them or hearing them nothing will ever make me as happy as being totally consumed by a good story.

Haven’t I seen you before?

You’re more likely to have heard me than seen me, as I used to be a fairly prolific podcaster, but otherwise you might have caught me on stage during my acting days, for which I apologise.

Anything else you'd like to share with us?

Just a big thanks for taking a look at my profile and I hope to meet you soon!
