Danielle Clode
Meet the Speaker
Where were you born?
I grew up in the coastal town of Port Lincoln in South Australia where my parents built a boat. We spent the rest of my childhood sailing around the south and east coast of Australia to north Queensland, so I’ve lived in a lot of different places when I was young.
What other jobs have you had?
I’ve been a writer and a researcher for most of my life, but my first job was in an underwater observatory in the Whitsunday Islands. I’ve also been a zookeeper and a scientific interpreter for museums.
What themes are recurring in your work?
Nature, science and history. All of my books are about the environment and animals and the people who study them.
What have been the highlights of your career?
It’s very exciting when books win prizes, but I think one of my favourite awards was when one of my books was selected for the Junior Judges shadow judging awards for the Children’s Book Council.
Where have your works been published?
My books have been published worldwide, and just in Australia. Koala was translated into Russian and I’ve also had books translated into French.
Haven’t I seen you before?
I’ve featured in a couple of documentaries based on my books which screened on ABC and SBS TV. But you are more likely to hear me on ABC radio.
