Meet the Speaker
Where were you born?
I was born in Canberra to two civil servants. At the age of seventeen, I decided to avoid a full-time job and a steady wage to move to Melbourne and become a writer. It seemed like the easier option at the time.
What other jobs have you had?
I have been many things in my life before I could call myself an author. These included: Cheesemonger, Waitress, Christmas Elf, Nanny, Receptionist, Cinema Attendant, Film Reviewer and Music Video Director.
What themes are recurring in your work?
My novels all centre on themes around identity and belonging. My characters are often outcasts, who have trouble fitting into the world.
What have been the highlights of your career?
My debut novel, Only Daughter, was optioned by Universal Studios. Going to Los Angeles and taking meetings with executives was very surreal! Also, every time I get a message from a reader in a foreign language telling my how much they enjoyed one of my books is such a lovely feeling.
Where have your works been published?
My books have been published in twenty countries all around the world. In The Netherlands they even printed one of my books into a magazine so it could be sold at train stations!
I’ve also written for The Griffith Review, The Guardian and Lindsay.
What are you passionate about?
I’m passionate about the importance of education, feminism and kindness.
Also, cats.
Haven't I seen you before?
I’ve been involved in many literary festivals, spoken on podcasts and on the radio. Or maybe you remember me from my Christmas Elf days?
