That’s What Wings Are For

by Patrick Guest

Description

An interactive, heartfelt reading of Patrick’s bestselling first book That's what Wings are for - which was inspired by his son Noah’s battle with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

The session opens with a question: Who feels like they’re a little bit different?

Patrick then reveals an assortment of stuffed ‘normal’ dragons of increasing size, before introducing a ‘different’ sort of dragon - our main character, Bluey.

Patrick then shares the emotional reasons for writing this story (at an age appropriate level).

The reading that follows doubles as a pantomime workshop, with students encouraged to join the stage and act out various scenes, including a song performed by ‘The Bearded Dragon’.

At the emotional conclusion, where Bluey realises ‘what his wings’ are for, students are invited to close their eyes and meditate on the presence of warmth within – representing the kindness within every human heart.

Topics Covered:
  • Celebration of diversity.
  • Different types of disability – some are invisible
  • Anti-bullying
  • The power of kindness
