Raising Australian Readers

by Danielle Binks

Description

Informed by her work as a literary agent, writer, and creative writing lecturer at RMIT, Danielle delivers a session for educators and interested adults on encouraging literacy and reading in young people.

Grounded in data from the Australia Reads report, Danielle breaks down the research and explains the current reading landscape, as well as the impact on the book industry, creative sector, and the state of literacy in the nation.

Given enough notice, Danielle can tailor creative-writing exercises to primary or secondary school classroom.

Topics Covered

  • Equipping teachers, librarians, parents and guardians with the basics to foster a love of reading in all children – from preschool to graduation – including helpful tips around 'decision fatigue' when it comes to kids choosing which book to read, getting them to articulate their likes and interests in genres and book forms.
  • How to foster a lifelong love of recreational reading, rather than focusing on literacy skills only.
  • The importance of promoting a variety of genres and forms, including poetry, graphic novels, audiobooks, comic books, as well as narrative fiction.
  • Ideas and tips for classroom creative writing that appeals to emerging illustrators, writers, and big idea creators who need a little more help wrestling their ideas into a story
  • Promoting 'students need school libraries' as a vital part of school communities and cultural hubs.
