Dean Rankine

Dean Rankine is a Ledger and Stanley Award winning comic book artist, illustrator, writer and painter on the ABC's, Portrait Artist of the Year. He's best known for his work on Simpsons Comics and Rick and Morty. His other credits include; Futurama, Invader Zim, Hellboy, Underdog, Oggy and the Cockroaches, The Phantom, I Hate Fairyland and The Riverdale Diaries: Starring Veronica. He's the illustrator of the Brock the Croc series, On The First Day Of School and the Timmy the Ticked-Off Pony series (written by Magda Szubanski). He's also the writer/illustrator of, Freaky Tales: Can You Find the Piggies?, Can You Find the Easter Bunny?, Can You Find the Easter Bunny? Around Australia, Can You Find Santa's Elves?, Mrs Snitch is a Witch and the Death Metal Emo Elves series. He likes watching cat videos.

Where were you born?


Melbourne born and bred. I grew up in Rye on the Mornington Peninsula.

What other jobs have you had?


I’ve worked as an Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Counsellor, Youth Worker, Support Worker for Homeless people and an Outreach Worker with a Needle and Syringe Program. I also used to work in a library.

What themes are recurring in your work?


Comedy and satire.

What have been the highlights of your career?


Working for Simpsons and Futurama comics has been a hoot! It’s given me lots of opportunities to travel, meet people and talk up comics!

Haven’t I seen you before?


I was a finalist on, Portrait Artist of the Year S1 Australia on ABC TV and ABC iview (which averaged over 1.1 million viewers per episode). I was featured on the comic documentary, Agony and Ecstasy, I've been a guest at over one hundred pop culture conventions throughout Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia and been interviewed for magazines, podcasts and radio. 

Anything else you’d like to share with us?


My dislikes include roller-blading and being eaten by sharks.
