Meet the Speaker
Where were you born?
I was born in Sydney and lived in a tiny, dark little house in Rozelle with my parents before we moved to the outer suburbs. It is probably worth one billion dollars now.
What other jobs have you had?
My first job was at KFC where I smelled of chicken long after I finished my shift. Then I worked in a jewellery shop which was only slightly more glamourous. I also worked for a judge (which involved everything from picking up his dry-cleaning to checking legal judgments). I then practised as a lawyer and subsequently worked at the Australian Human Rights Commission.
What themes are recurring in your work?
Friendship, fairness, family, fitting-in, fun (nearly all the F words it seems!). Also power and the environment.
What have been the highlights of your career?
The biggest highlight was when my middle-grade manuscript was accepted for publication. I remember dancing around the kitchen with my kids who didn’t really understand what was happening but are always up for a spontaneous dance session. Then seeing my books in real-life bookshops was pretty cool. And it’s always a highlight when kids laugh at something I’ve written.
Where have your works been published?
Australia.
What are you passionate about?
The importance of reading for enjoyment, the value of humour in books, equality and protecting our environment.
Haven’t I seen you before?
Perhaps at the front of a courtroom, sitting stony-faced next to a judge?
Anything else you’d like to share with us?
I have a weakness for donuts and reality TV. Preferably at the same time.
