Meet the Speaker

What other jobs have you had?

Nanny, gardener, and a waitress at Melbourne Aquarium – I spent most of my time extricating drunk patrons from the turtle enclosure and spilling entire trays of drinks down the entrance staircase. I didn’t work there very long.

What themes are recurring in your work?

All of my projects so far, published or otherwise, feature a bold, grubby girl with no regard for gender conventions. Also cake.

What have been the highlights of your career?

I got a rejection letter once that said "we love your work – we just don’t love it enough". Hopefully I can top that soon.

What are you passionate about?

I’ve met a lot of reluctant writers and illustrators in the classroom. I’m passionate about supporting students to uncover their own unique drawing style, and proving that artistic talent isn’t something you’re born with – it’s something you practice, which is half the fun anyway.

Haven't I seen you before?

I’ve been told I bear a slight resemblance to Diane Keaton – she’s 46 years older than me but I’m flattered anyway.
