You’d Be Great in Accounts
by Sam Drummond
Description
The road to employment for high school leavers is being disrupted beyond recognition.
Since 2016, the number of students studying for bachelor’s degrees has fallen more than 13 per cent since 2016. At the same time, the number of apprenticeships has fallen to record numbers.
That leaves young people battling to get a job. The youth unemployment rate is more than twice the wide population. And that gets even more difficult for people with disabilities.
So how do high school kids look for a career they love when the pathways are getting narrower at every turn?
As a person with a disability growing up in regional Victoria, Sam Drummond faced assumptions about what sort of jobs he could do and a soft bigotry of low expectations.
After some early mentors ushered him into employment, he has since had careers in media, politics and law.
In ‘You’d Be Great In Accounts’, Sam provides an insight into how to get a foot into the employment door and to chase the job you love, not just the job the careers counsellor tells you you’d be good at.
