Write What you Know (No, Really)

by Tobias Madden

Description

How to use real life to create compelling fiction.

All three of my novels are inspired by personal experiences, and they are all set in the country town where I grew up (plus a little getaway on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean, where I also lived for a year!).

Using real life to craft fiction can be incredibly powerful, but it's not as simple as it sounds. This session will help students draw upon their lived experiences to create characters who feel real and stories that shine with authenticity.
  • Using personal experience to spark ideas
  • Adding real-life moments to fictional stories
  • Separating yourself from your characters
  • Writing about people you know (is this allowed?)
  • Transcribing memories - using the five senses to bring past events to life on the page
