Write For Your Life

by Harry Laing

Description

*Harry is happy to present a 20min poetry performance in addition to any of his sessions*

A writing workshop where students are encouraged to write what it is they really need to say. Beginning with freeing up techniques, this workshop allows students’ imaginations free play. The emphasis can be on poetry and/ or adventurous writing in whatever form. I read out poems to inspire and create different moods, serious/ reflective or playful/ fun. The students respond with their own words. I offer provocations such as ‘My Left Hand’ ask them to finish 50 word microstories with a given first line, or to write about someone they know well. They can investigate the secret life of an object or imagine being trapped underground. I encourage students to share their work.

Topics covered:

*Stretching those creative writing muscles

*Hearing quality poetry that surprises and delights.

*Responding with something original and discarding cliché.

*Working with all the elements of good writing, experimenting with language, enjoying sound and rhythm as well as meaning.

*Not worrying about how to start or overthinking it. Just plunging in.

*Writing more than you ever thought you would.
