Ultrawild - Design Labs
by Steve Mushin
Description
1. COMICS LAB – The Power of Drawing and Comics
How can drawing help us solve problems? How does drawing and telling stories build our brains creative thinking strength? And why should EVERYONE draw pictures and tell stories about the future?
(Note: this is the half, or full day version of the ‘Ultrawild Talk –The World-Changing Power of Drawing and Comics’ mentioned above. With the extra time, Steve helps participants develop their narratives produce more detailed drawings.) This workshop is a high-energy discussion about the power of drawing, comic-making, and stretching our imaginations. It aims to help excite and empower a new generation of creatives to radically rethink our future. Steve discusses the various drawing and narrative techniques used in Ultrawild. And he shows how drawing and comic sequences help us imagine future possibilities while building our brain’s creative thinking capabilities. The session consists of a 30 minute talk, followed by a half or full day’s worth of drawing-focused challenges to help the audience connect with their inner illustrators and comic artists.
1: Steve demonstrates his ideation processes by drawing live on a whiteboard. He then challenges participants to develop and pitch their own very short comic ideas.
2: Steve demonstrates different ways to create characters and draw comic cells and create narrative. He then helps participants turn one of their ideas into a comic narrative.

2. DESIGN LAB – Redesigning And Rewilding Every City On Earth
How would we ACTUALLY rewild every city on earth? With compost cannons, 3D printer birds, sewer submarines, flying bikes and many other outrageous sounding, but theoretically possible environmental design ideas found in Steve’s book, Ultrawild. Join the team and work with Steve to invent your own ultrawild inventions!
(Note: this is the half, or full day version of the ‘Ultrawild Workshop – Redesigning And Rewilding Every City On Earth’, mentioned above. With the extra time, Steve helps students create detailed drawings and build models of their designs.) This workshop is a high energy STEM ideas-jam about the power of creative thinking and the potential we have to change our world for the better. Filled with laugh-out-loud design-ridiculousness, Steve Mushin aims to empower and excite a new generation of designers, scientists, engineers and wild thinkers. The session consists of a 30-40 minute talk, followed by a half or full day’s worth of high-speed, drawing and design challenges to help attendees think creatively about tackling environmental challenges. Activities include:
