Ultawild - Workshops

by Steve Mushin

Description

1. Redesigning and Rewilding Every City On Earth

How would we ACTUALLY rewild every city on earth? With compost cannons, 3D printer birds, sewer submarines, flying bikes and many other outrageous sounding, but theoretically possible environmental design ideas found in Steve’s book, Ultrawild. Join the team and work with Steve to invent your own ultrawild inventions!

(Note: This workshop is a longer version of the 1 hour ‘Ultrawild Talk – An Audacious Plan to Rewild Every City On Earth’, mentioned above. It contains the same intro talk, but offers an extra hour or two of design challenges.) This workshop is a high energy STEM ideas-jam about the power of creative thinking and the potential we have to change our world for the better. Filled with laugh-out-loud design-ridiculousness, Steve Mushin aims to empower and excite a new generation of designers, scientists, engineers and wild thinkers.

The session consists of a 30-40 minute talk, followed by 1-2 hours of high-speed, drawing and design challenges to help participants think creatively about tackling environmental challenges. Activities include:

1: Steve demonstrates his ideation processes by drawing live on a whiteboard. He then challenges participants to develop and pitch their own ideas.

2: Steve demonstrates how to create detailed design drawings. He then helps participants turn one of their previous ideas into a detailed drawing.

3: If there is time, Steve demonstrates 3D drawing, and helps participants further illustrate their ideas in 3D.

Topics Covered:
  • STEM for Designing Future Cities
  • Incredible Ecological Design Projects That Could Change The World
  • Epic-Scale Ecological Engineering
  • Creative Thinking

2. The World-Changing Power of Drawing and Comics

How can drawing help us solve problems? How does drawing and telling stories help build our brain’s creative thinking strength? And why should EVERYONE draw pictures and tell stories about the future?

(Note: This workshop is a longer version of the 1 hour ‘Ultrawild Talk –The World-Changing Power of Drawing and Comics’ mentioned above. It contains the same intro talk, but offers an extra hour or two of comic making and drawing challenges.) This workshop is a high-energy discussion about the power of drawing, comic-making, and stretching our imaginations. It aims to help excite and empower a new generation of creatives to radically rethink our future. Steve discusses the various drawings and narrative techniques he has used in Ultrawild. And shows how drawing and comic sequences can help build our creative thinking and imagine future possibilities. The session consists of a 30 minute talk, followed by a series of drawing-focussed challenges to help the audience connect with their inner illustrators.

1: Steve demonstrates his ideation processes by drawing live on a whiteboard. He then challenges participants to develop and pitch their own very short comic ideas.
