The Independent Pea
by Maree Coote
Description
Pea was ambitious. Pea was independent. Pea wanted to be a star. ‘That pod’s holding me back,’ thought Pea ….
Pea wanted to go it alone. Pea didn’t need the pod. Pea was fine without them.
But how can a single pea ever get to work with those big dinner legends like Pasta, Roasts and Sausages? Can Pea achieve success without the pod?
Join Pea on a quest for self-fulfillment that reveals the power of friends, community and collaboration.
‘A story of raw ambition!’
Finished with some fabulous ‘recipeas’ for some easy-peasy cooking fun.
Topics Covered
Confidence, resilience, collaboration, self-belief, co-operation, the individual and the group, collective effort, self-expression, creativity….and Cooking!
This little book highlights the idea that while working alone is great—and individual creativity is great–there are also great benefits to working with others.
Indeed, sometimes working with others is the only path to success.
Aside from Sport, this idea doesn't get much air. Indeed, it can seem that Sport is the only collaboration on offer, which is of course nonsense.
The notion of The Self is playing out for our younger generations in some unfortunate ways today. The cult of the personality/individual is seeing the community become increasingly atomised. We see a youth that is often withdrawing into itself under the mistaken idea that everyone is a perfect island and should be able to cope alone.
Social Media promises a ‘togetherness' that it doesn't deliver.
We see a belief that big life problems can be ‘solved' by individual positive thinking instead of by real collective action.
The focus on The Self can engender isolation, competition, envy, disappointment and unhappiness. And meanwhile, the benefits —and the real power — of collective action are ignored.
Lots to discuss in classroom groups.
