Songs and Stories

by Kim Kane

Description

This session revolves around three of Kim’s picture books – Esther’s Rainbow, The Vegetable Ark and The Unexpected Crocodile – and includes an engaging mix of songs, stories and discussion of how writers are weavers who incorporate threads from their lives into their work.

The presentation is on Powerpoint, and includes a reading of the picture books, so that it is visual enough to interest children. The session can be adapted for very young children to not include concepts like synesthesia, Kim can instead perform another song for The Unexpected Crocodile.
Topics:

  • Esther’s Rainbow: the rainbow spectrum and synesthesia (the idea of experiencing colour with more than one sense) and performance of ‘The Rainbow Song’
  • The Vegetable Ark: performance of ‘The Vegetables Went in Two by Twos’
  • The Unexpected Crocodile: the inspiration behind the story - everything from the people in it, to pictures of the Queensland floods and Masterchef
