Parody

by Penny Tangey

Description

To write a successful parody it is essential to understand the structure and conventions of the writing being parodied. This workshop gets students to analyse a simple piece of writing and to have fun parodying it.

The session begins with a discussion of what parody is illustrated by a parody quiz with fake and real parodies.

The students then analyze the structure and conventions of a picture book, for example, Usborne’s That’s Not My… series and write parodies of the book. For longer sessions, students rewrite the story as a parody of another genre.

This workshop can be adapted to suit older or younger students by changing the text being parodied.

Topics:
  • What is parody?
  • Why writing parodies is a useful writing exercise.
  • How to get started writing parody.
