Let’s talk about porn and consent

by Jane Gilmore

Description

By the time a boy in Australia is 16 years old, he will have seen online pornography. Up to 80% of boys say they watch it at least once a week. The median age of first viewing is 13 years old. Girls and LGBTIQ+ young people are also viewing and regularly watching porn at increasing rates.

While we’re still working to understand the effect this has on young people, we do know it can distort their expectations of sex, bodies, and themselves.

Talking to young people about porn can be uncomfortable for most adults. We all understand why, but it means even the most basic information about how realistic porn is, why certain acts are often included, and how it makes money is not commonly communicated to young people.

Jane Gilmore has had this conversation with teens many times. This is a frank, non-judgmental, informative, and calm information session to help young people understand what they’re seeing and what it means for their lives.

This session can be for secondary school students or for parents wanting to help their teen children better understand porn and consent.

Topics covered:
* What porn is and what it isn’t
* How porn makes money
* Porn and body image
* Image based abuse
* Porn and affirmative consent
