Inspiring Students to Write

*Harry is happy to present a 20min poetry performance in addition to any of his sessions*
This hands-on practical workshop is designed to give teachers confidence around teaching creative writing and poetry. It is particularly focused on teachers encouraging students to get writing. Practical and dynamic ways of engaging a student’s imagination will be modelled and a range of a strong poems read out highlighting poetry’s unique ability to kickstart the inventive use of language. Participants will enjoy the wide range of exercises which they can then take away and use in the classroom.
Topics covered:
*What to look for in students’ writing: how to pinpoint when it’s working and what could be improved or made clearer.
*Developing trust in the student’s writing process and that every student has something distinctive to express. Not over-explaining how to start or how to proceed and encouraging the original and off-beat. Being tough on cliché.
*Learning about the huge range of quality poetry ‘out there’ and seeing how it can be used as inspiration and provocation for student’s writing and appreciation.
