Get Writing
by Harry Laing
Description
*Harry is happy to present a 20min poetry performance in addition to any of his sessions*
A workshop to get the youngest students excited about words and language and BEING A WRITER. I perform a selection of simple, fun and energetic poems and the students are then asked to respond with their own. Just getting a few words down, or if they can, a few lines. They might attempt to write a piece ‘My Strange Pet’ (which could be a brick or a pencil or a water bottle) I also offer chants which are interactive, i.e. the whole class participates in the call and response. And I bring in the creatures from my book covers: Shoctopus, MoonFish and RapperBee (who are themselves performers!) It’s all about creating a buzz round words and rhythm and sound and language. I also ask if any students would like to share and many do.
Topics Covered:
*Hearing and responding to poems
*Diving into writing their own. Which can be in any form i.e. poem or narrative. (Often produces images too!)
*Not worrying about the ‘right way’ do it.
*The excitement about writing: about expressing yourself in words.
*Hearing what your classmates have come up with.
