From Seed to Story

by Lisa Shanahan

Description

An in-depth, interactive session that explores how a picture book is made from first tiny seed to final publication. Students will explore where ideas come from, the best ways to catch a character, the importance of imperfect messy first drafts and excellent editing. They will examine in-depth the visual contribution by the illustrator to a picture book, the reality that the best illustrators are always layering and deepening a story, in immensely subtle and clever ways. Students will come away with a deeper capacity for visual literacy, a wider grasp of the importance of a playful approach to language and imagery and a greater understanding of the importance of editing and revision in both text and illustration.

Topic covered:
  • How to generate ideas.
  • Visual literacy.
  • Character development.
  • Tips and encouragement as writers.
