Description

How to write realistic, engaging dialogue.

After spending 10 years of my life performing professionally in musicals around Australia and New Zealand, it's no surprise that crafting dialogue is my favourite part of the writing process. But putting realistic conversations on the page is not nearly as easy as it sounds.

In this session, I will demonstrate the difference between strong and weak dialogue in the context of a story, and give students tools to strengthen their character's voice and write authentic, compelling dialogue (and inner monologues, too!).
  • What makes "good" dialogue?
  • How to spot "bad" dialogue
  • How to give your protagonist a clear "voice"
  • How to differentiate between your characters when they're in conversation
  • Conveying exposition, emotion, humour, and subtext through dialogue
  • Dialogue tags - how to make them work for you
