Fierce, Funny, True!
by Lisa Shanahan
Description
An interactive session that explores what it takes to be a writer, all the highs and the lows. Students will discover the way that writers are the ultimate bridge-builders, always trying to make connections with their readers, through emotion, words, imagery, and story. They will discover the four important doorways to great fiction, and they will explore the way keeping a journal can help a writer welcome crackling ideas and fresh new ways of seeing the world. They will gain a deeper appreciation of the editorial process; the importance of drafting and revision, the crucial role of feedback, what to do with criticism that feels overwhelming and what to do when they are stuck in a story. Students will come away from the session more deeply inspired to look to their own lives for important stories, and with a deeper understanding that good writing is a process that takes time, risk, experimentation, failure, resilience, and courage.
