Exploring Identity, Self-esteem and Mental Health through Storytelling with The Lies We Tell Ourselves
by Maura Pierlot
Description
This writing workshop aims to provide a forum for exploring a range of issues through storytelling, including grief, depression, anxiety, body image and self-identity, while reinforcing that support is always available.
Guided by the author, students will examine different writing styles and analyse how language and writing can evoke mood, tension and characterisation. Through critical thinking strategies and exploring differing perspectives, students will consider how grief and loss might appear through the lens of mental health, utilising excerpts from The Lies We Tell Ourselves for reference.
Through whole group and small group discussions, simple drama activities, and/or writing exercises, students will respond to selected questions from the text, focusing on the themes of relationships, resilience, perseverance and the power of human connection.
This workshop serves as a stepping stone or introduction to exploration of philosophical thought and perspectives on grief, loss and mental health through storytelling.
Note: This workshop can be tailored for lower secondary (Yrs 7-8) or high school (Years 11-12).
Topics covered:

*self-esteem
