Engaging and Empowering Year 10 Drug & Alcohol Education Sessions

by Sharon Torpey (DARTA)

Description

Due to high demand, Sharon is now offering newly created Year 10 packages!

Throughout the day, Sharon hosts up to 3x sessions for groups of Year 10 students. These sessions focus on creating meaningful connections in an intimate, judgement-free setting.

With groups of up to 50, the sessions encourage open conversation, fun peer-to-peer activities, and critical thinking skills.

These sessions are designed to get students thinking critically and talking openly about drug and alcohol use. The goal is for them to actively develop their own strategies for staying safe while also encouraging a deeper understanding of informed consent, reducing stigma, and breaking down barriers to seeking help. Students will also learn how to identify and combat dangerous social media trends that glamorize substance use and promote risky behaviours.

Duration: Each session runs for approx 80- 90 minutes depending on Q&A time, this can be customised if required.

Learning Materials Provided. Follow-up sessions are available to continue the conversation and reinforce key concepts.

To make the most of this experience, it’s encouraged that schools bring students together in their own time to discuss what they got out of the session and what was most helpful!

Continuing the conversation beyond the session keeps the learning process alive and provides students with the chance to reinforce key concepts, share their thoughts, and support one another.

Optional feature – Add a Paramedic Perspective

For an even deeper understanding, schools have the option to add a paramedic to the session. Paramedics bring real-world experience to the conversation, sharing firsthand insights from their callouts, where they often assist young people dealing with drug and alcohol concerns. They’re happy to answer student questions, demonstrate how to handle situations, and provide advice based on their on-the-ground expertise. Paramedics are incredibly engaging, and students often ask about their career as well, which they are always eager to discuss.

Topics Covered

Through interactive discussions, students will explore important topics like:

  • Emerging Psychoactive Substances: What are they, what do they do, and what can go wrong?
