Embracing Diversity – Let’s Explore Disability

by Eliza Hull OAM

Description

Did you know that 20% of people in Australia have a disability? Yet, why do we rarely see characters with disabilities in our books?

As someone living with Charcot Marie Tooth, a physical disability, I am passionate about educating students on disability language, fostering a more accessible and inclusive world, and exploring why disability representation has been lacking in literature. Together, we can make a difference.

During our session, we explore various disabilities, I teach Auslan through songs, and read from my children’s book ‘Come Over To My House’.

Topics Covered:
  • Disability language
  • Different types of disabilities
  • The social model of disability
  • Ways to make the world more inclusive and accessible
  • My own personal story
