‘Collecting Colour’ Collage Basket Workshop
by Kylie Dunstan
Description
In this workshop I use my picture book Collecting Colour as the basis for a discussion about writing and illustrating.
During an initial 15 minutes of mat time we read the book and discuss the story. We will look at some real examples of the baskets which inspired the book (I will bring these along with me).
I will then demonstrate how I created the baskets for the illustrations by twisting the tissue paper.
This is followed by a ‘hands on’ workshop where the class will recreate one of the pages from the book using the same technique I used when making Collecting Colour.
The completed baskets are then used to recreate one of the pages from the book. I will provide a painted illustration to use in the activity which the school can then keep.

Topics:
- Writing and Illustrating
- Different cultures/friendship
- This is a great session to tie in with any ‘paddock to plate’ style units of inquiry that the students may be investigating in class.
