Character Creation – Drawing Together

by Cate James

Description

An exercise in working together in groups, to create characters in two different ways:

  1. Groups will work together to draw a character based on a written description from a book I have illustrated. They won’t see the character I drew, or those of other groups, until the end of the session. It’ll probably be a non-human character to begin with.
  2. Groups will draw their own character and write a description to swap with another group, who will then try to draw what they think the other group has drawn.

We will then reveal all the drawings and compare likenesses and differences usually with much hilarity.

Topics:

Introduced by me:

* Quick intro into me and my work as an illustrator

* How does an illustrator begin designing a character (can be interactive or not)

* How do we translate a written description into a drawing/a drawing into a written description?

For the groups to work on:

* How do we work together to draw the character?

* What is the personality of the character? Fleshing-out the drawing into a credible character

* Reflection on the processes/ questions
