Book Sculpture: Reimagining the book

by Nicholas Jones

Description

Beginning with a powerpoint presentation and discussing the concept of book sculpture. Many examples of finished book sculptures are brought into the classroom and the children are encouraged to ask questions. A series of demonstrations are given which get the ideas flowing. For primary aged students, there is a strong storytelling element where each of the books is given a fun story or context, such as a bookworm, or a Facebook.

Children are also allowed to pass around and examine small examples of this style of work to really engage with it.

Duration

60 minutes (Sessions can be tailored by the teacher for best results). I am very flexible and open to suggestions.

Requirements

Data Projector, with a computer which can use a Mac format PowerPoint presentation. Usually this format is readable by most PCs. The students are asked to bring along a hardcover book of their own to work with. If the librarians have any books which have been deaccessioned, they can also be brought along to give the students more options. If the students are in upper primary and are allowed to use scissors, a class set is suggested.
