A Sydney Opera House History from an Aboriginal Perspective
by Melissa-Jane Fogarty
Description
Tubowgule: A Sydney Opera House History tells the story of the iconic Opera House and the land on which it was built, while acknowledging the ongoing importance to Aboriginal people.
As a child I knew only bits and pieces of the history of this country and specifically Aboriginal history from what my father passed on and the scraps of knowledge shared when I was at school. I wrote Tubowgule: A Sydney Opera House History for the child I was who would’ve appreciated the truth-telling and felt proud of the ongoing connection Aboriginal people have with these significant sites today, and for the children of today who will continue to learn and embrace our Aboriginal culture.
This session shares the knowledge and history of Tubowgule while including fun activities to engage students in their understanding of Country.
Topics covered:
- Sydney Opera House history from an Aboriginal perspective
- The importance of place and Country
- Who are the Gadi people?
- Brief introduction to some Aboriginal symbols
