Huge congratulations to the 2020-2021 Australian Children’s Laureate, Ursula Dubosarsky! ⁣

Ursula has authored over 60 books, and her theme for the two year term will be Read For Your Life.

In her address, Ursula prioitises getting children to their local library and to visit regularly. “Libraries are much more than research and information centres, they are palaces of fiction… there’s great symbolic value in a school having a dedicated space for reading – it tells children that it’s important.” ⁣

Get set… Get Ready…

And we’re off! To all the students and teachers starting school this week, or simply returning for the new year, we wish you a fantastic year full of success and fun! 📚✏🍎

We were devastated to learn yesterday that Steph Bowe has passed away. ⁣

Steph was a wonderful author and speaker (Night Swimming, Girl Saves Boy, All This Could End) who inspired hundreds of students and young adult readers over the years. This is a terrible loss to the YA community, and our thoughts are with Steph’s loved ones during this difficult time.

New speaker alert: the legendary Jared Thomas! ⁣

A Nukunu person of the Southern Flinders Ranges, Jared works as a museum curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art and Cultural Material.⁣

With multiple YA and childrens’ titles under his belt (Calypso Summer, Songs That Sound Like Blood, Game Day series with Patty Mills), Jared’s books often center on the stories, histories and aspirations of Aboriginal people and communities.⁣

Themes of gender, sexuality, the environment and marginalisation are also explored in Jared’s work, under the wider topics of belonging and culture.⁣

Get on the phone to your friends and teachers in Adelaide – Jared is now available for Book Week and beyond!

Over the break, we’ve been keeping a close eye on the amazing #authorsforfireys campaign, launched by Nova Weetman and Emily Gale which has since raised hundreds of thousands for fire relief. ⁣

As #authorsforfireys is now over, we want to draw attention to the CBCA and GIVIT fundraiser to Buy a Book for children and adults affected by the bushfire crisis.⁣

100% of the money donated to #booksforbushfires will go to buying books from local independent booksellers, to be distributed among schools, libraries, evacuation centres and others supporting those in need.⁣

To donate, you can do so via: https://cbca.org.au/news/buy-a-book-for-a-child-or-young-adult
