Yves Stening

Author, Child Eating Habits, Storyteller/Performer

Fun, witty and informative, Yves Stening delights children and teachers alike with his wonderful kids series, Dinner Detectives.

Where were you born?

Wellington, New Zealand

What other jobs have you had?

I have had a life in the arts, first as an actor, then a screen director and writer.  I’ve written for episodic TV, feature films and produced many TV advertising campaigns. I’ve also taught screenwriting and directing at NIDA.

What themes are recurring in your work?

Aksel, one of the protagonists of my stories, only eats white things.  The stories are about adventure and experiencing new things and in Aksel’s case, that means simply trying something new.  He doesn’t have to like it, but it’s fun to try.

What have been the highlights of your career?

Working for Sydney Theatre Company, winning several awards for my short films and winning the MIP Junior Pitching Competition in Cannes, 2018, which means Dinner Detectives is now becoming a TV series, produced right here in Melbourne.

Where have your works been published?

The Dinner Detectives series is available in Australia, NZ, UK and USA

What are you passionate about?

In a world that is becoming more and more xenophobic, I’m passionate about revealing the delights of otherness and difference to children, that there’s nothing to fear and much fun to have. I’m passionate about the fun of exploring food and the simple steps that create healthy eating habits

Haven’t I seen you before?

You may have, on screen or on stage, anywhere between the mid 70’s to the late 90’s.

Anything else you’d like to share?

I love being a dad, I love reading, listening to music and sailing fast, small boats on Port Phillip Bay (it frees my mind).
