Lorette Broekstra writes and illustrates children’s picture books. She wrote and illustrated the best selling Baby Bear and Hugo series.

What other jobs have you had?

I have worked as a screen printer, a barmaid, a waitress, a teacher and in retail.

What themes are recurring in your work?

My books are for very young children, so everyday activities that a toddler may do come up regularly. My characters are also often animals.

What have been the highlights of your career?

The highlight of my career was winning the Crichton Award for Children’s Book Illustration in 2000.

What are you passionate about?

I love bookshops. I can spend hours in the Children’s section of a good bookshop.

Where have your works been published?

As well as in Australia, my books have been published in the UK, Korea, Taiwan, France and Spain.
