Anna Zobel is an author and illustrator from Melbourne. Her middle-grade series Little Gem was a CBCA Notable in 2022, and was also shortlisted for the Readings Prize. She is the illustrator of several books including Who’s Your Real Mum?, which made the 2020 CBCA Shortlist and was chosen for the eminent White Raven Award in Europe. Her new book This Camp is Doomed will be released in August 2023. Besides writing and illustrating, Anna is also a gallery teacher with a primary background. She is passionate about fostering confidence, and helping students to discover their own unique style.
Nanny, gardener, and a waitress at Melbourne Aquarium – I spent most of my time extricating drunk patrons from the turtle enclosure and spilling entire trays of drinks down the entrance staircase. I didn’t work there very long.
All of my projects so far, published or otherwise, feature a bold, grubby girl with no regard for gender conventions. Also cake.
I got a rejection letter once that said “we love your work – we just don’t love it enough”. Hopefully I can top that soon.
I’ve met a lot of reluctant writers and illustrators in the classroom. I’m passionate about supporting students to uncover their own unique drawing style, and proving that artistic talent isn’t something you’re born with – it’s something you practice, which is half the fun anyway.
I’ve been told I bear a slight resemblance to Diane Keaton – she’s 46 years older than me but I’m flattered anyway.
The children were completely engaged with Anna and her presentation. They were all able to produce artwork, in spite of the fact that there were some very small children in the multi-age audience. I cannot recommend Anna enough. He control of the audience and engagement with the children was exemplary.
