Anna Zobel: Everyone Can Write and Illustrate

Session Info:

Anna uses her experience as a primary school teacher to make her workshops as fun, engaging and inspiring as possible. This workshop takes students through a series of writing and drawing exercises designed to get creative juices flowing. This program is the perfect accompaniment to Writer’s Workshop as it follows a similar process, leading students to create and illustrate a short class story.

A typical workshop would include some of the following activities:

  • Evaluating the process of how Anna created her books (including many drafts and edits)
  • Quick brainstorm / seed-generating warm-up
  • Creating a plan: what will we tell with our words? What could we show with our picture?
  • Collaborating on a draft and editing that draft
  • Finalising a story
  • Drafting and completing a picture that adds to our story

Topics Covered:

  • How Anna became an author/illustrator
  • An effective writing and drawing process
  • Purpose of illustrations: the author tells, the illustrator shows
  • Sentence structure
  • What makes an engaging story
  • How to uncover your unique drawing style (our ‘drawing handwriting’)
  • Why there is no such thing as being ‘naturally’ good at drawing
  • Different methods of teaching yourself how to drawAnna uses her experience as a primary school teacher to make her workshops as fun, engaging and inspiring as possible.
