Andrew Rule

Author, Social Commentator, Journalist

Since starting on a country newspaper in 1975, Andrew Rule has worked on three metropolitan newspapers and in both radio and television production. He has written, co-written, edited and published many books, including the Underbelly true crime series and the Chopper series, which inspired the successful feature film. He hosts a regular fortnightly spot on Triple M’s Hot Breakfast called In The Rule World.

What other jobs have you had?

Too small to be a mounted policeman, too big to be professional jockey, too frightened to be boxer or rodeo rider. Rode one winner as amateur jockey, Omeo & District picnic races. Won 1974 Sale Agricultural Show essay prize (prize $5). Worked at The Times (Gippsland) and The Spectator (Maffra) before daring escape. Sentenced to three years at Monash University. On release, worked at The Age, The Herald, The Sun and briefly as a radio and television producer.

What themes are recurring in your work?

Fell into bad company after success of first book, Cuckoo. Pleaded guilty of conspiring to publish the Chopper series, and ditto Underbelly books, with John Silvester. Still wonders why his daughter decided to major in Criminology.

What have been the highlights of your career?

Stared down disgrace and went on to win Gold Walkley, Graham Perkin Journalist of the Year award (twice) and eight Quill awards.

What are you passionate about?

Married with three large children and shares in a slow racehorse.
