Amal Awad

Author, Social Commentator

Amal Awad is a writer and author who has spoken on issues of society, religion and popular culture. She has addressed festivals, universities, youth groups and community organisations, and has appeared on national radio. Her debut novel Courting Samira – a tale of Muslim courtship and coming of age in the modern era – will be followed in 2014 by two more books.

Where were you born?

Sydney, Australia.

What other jobs have you had?

I’ve been a retail assistant, lawyer, publishing editor and a journalist. I now consider myself a full-time writer in various capacities – journalist, columnist and author.

What themes are recurring in your work?

Life and society, with a focus on popular culture, religion and women. Self-development and empowerment.

What have been the highlights of your career?

The publication of Courting Samira, which was a quarter finalist in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award 2012, and appearing at All About Women at the Sydney Opera House.
