Heath McKenzie: Telling a story without the words

Session Info:

My sessions focus on visual storytelling. Whilst describing the overall process involved in illustrating a book from start to finish I focus on two key areas of huge storytelling power and importance – character design and interpreting the text.

Topics:

  • A brief glimpse at my body of work to date (give or take)
  • The process of completing a book from:
  • Manuscript to character design broken down into a) how to draw and b) telling a story whether you mean to or not (audience participation is required)
  • Illustrating the actual book part beginning with “illustrating the text” which demonstrates a rough drafting through to the final art
  • Finally delving beyond to ‘interpreting the text’ (the presentation includes visual examples while the workshop will require students to interpret/illustrate their own piece of a given text)
  • Concludes with a discussion of cover art and Q&A

I use a laptop and drawing tablet throughout so as to demonstrate as accurately as possible how I create my work.
