Jo Stanley: Play Like a Girl Session

Session Info:

The Play like a Girl series, created by Jo Stanley, is a celebration of Aussie girls kicking goals in the sport they love! The series is about an under 11’s girls footy team called the Flyers. It weaves the ordinary world of young girls with the thrill and excitement of playing AFL.

Written with humour and fun, each book focuses on one girl and her experiences playing footy and her general life of friends, school, and family. The football is the scaffolding of the books, but they’ll be relatable to all readers. This trailblazing new series is proudly in partnership with AFLW.

Themes explored include: gender equality, goal setting, overcoming failure, leadership, isolation and belonging, being active for health, self-acceptance and a growth mindset.

Key Curriculum Areas involve the learning areas of English, Civics and Citizenship, Health and Physical Education, and increase the general capabilities of literacy, critical and creative thinking, personal and social capability, ethical understanding and intercultural understanding.

Writing Workshops are highly interactive, and cover a three-step process:

  1. Creating a world and environment (footy club)
  2. Creating characters (footy team, school, families, friends)
  3. Building on Steps 1 and 2 to then create a plot.

Worksheets are also provided, and each activity is supported by readings from the books.

Talks are interactive discussions which involve Jo leading students though the same three steps covered in the Writing Workshops. After the talk, worksheets are provided to take back to the classroom.

The Play Like a Girl session can be conducted as either a talk or a workshop.
