Bec Kavanagh: Literary Landscape

Session Info:

There are some classics that can shape the path of your life if you read them at the right time. In this session I look at a set list of contemporary classics and discuss their relevance to readers at a secondary level and where they fit into a modern society.

The session is a mix of slides, videos and news articles linking the world that secondary students are shaping to a particular list of novels.

Novels include

  • Catcher in the Rye
  • 1984
  • One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
  • Slaughterhouse 5
  • A Room of One’s Own
  • A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
  • The Great Gatsby
  • The Ballad of the Sad Cafe
  • The Maltese Falcon
  • The Scarlet Letter
  • The Outsiders

  • What is a classic
  • The transition of texts (ie into graphic novels, films or inspiring whole genres)
  • Finding your place
  • Being culturally aware
  • Recognising the ‘danger’ (or the power) in books
