In his sessions with secondary students, Ron is often asked to speak with students about Aboriginal history, the environment and themes of Australian identity.
Ron is passionate about Indigenous history of South Eastern Australia, and has a wide knowledge of the treatment of Indigenous peoples and the government policies under which they lived. Ron brings together a personal narrative approach drawing on the experiences of his own parents, who both grew up on missions in Victoria and New South Wales, and from his wide reading on Victorian Aboriginal history.
Ron shares Indigenous approaches to knowledge, including oral history transmission, and the Indigenous practice of ‘dadirri’ or deep listening.
He integrates didgeridoo and storytelling into his sessions, as a way to ground students, and to make tangible that the telling of stories is a powerful expression of modern Indigenous culture.
Ron’s Indigenous Awareness workshops with school teachers offer an opportunity for teachers to gain insight into Australia’s Indigenous culture, history and contemporary issues through personal narrative. In particular, Ron’s training gives teachers the opportunity to learn from Ron how to engage better with Indigenous students, and to learn new skills in teaching units on Indigenous […]
