Leanne talks about the challenges of writing a personal piece of memoir for the anthology Growing Up Asian In Australia – the process of selection and structure of memories, the need for honesty, and the challenge of developing confidence in her voice and story. She also examines a wide range of responses to the anthology, discusses its relevancy to all young people, and tackles afresh the main themes of her essay, `How To Be Japanese.‘ Leanne talks frankly about her family, personal experiences and travels in China in an examination of identity, stereotyping, and our society’s emphasis on external appearances.
