Thomas Caldwell: Film as Text: Rear Window

Session Info:

Providing background context and an analysis of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 film Rear Window, I discuss American cinema and politics of the 1950s, surveillance as a political act, voyeurism as a psychological act, how the film implicates the audience in its voyeurism, the male gaze, representations of gender and sexuality, and the nature of public and private spaces. Introducing and using essential film analysis terminology I cover how the key themes of the film are represented by the various characters, with a close analysis of key scenes.
