Tony Palmer: How to design a book cover

Session Info:

Design is a big industry and often the first contact a student has with the world of design is through books. So, how do book publishers work?

Tony has been a book designer for thirty years. In that time he has seen, done and heard it all – ‘black covers are too depressing, white covers get dirty too quick, photographs date too quickly, illustrated covers make the story look too young… but in all of this there is a process, and it can at times be inspirational.

Topics:

  • The book publishing process
  • The book design process
  • Class exercise – working a cover up together: image, colour, and typography
