Creating Characters

Session Info:

Kate has gained a reputation as one of Australia’s funniest character comedians. Her work has featured on ‘The Mansion’ for the Comedy Channel and the ‘Logies’, along with guest roles on several other TV shows. Her critically acclaimed one-woman comedy ‘The Debutante Diaries’ toured nationally in 2009 and won the awards for Best Comedy and Best Newcomer in the Melbourne Fringe, along with a nomination for Best Show in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

In her ‘Creating Characters’ workshop Kate provides students with a range of exercises and tools to help create three-dimensional characters that jump off the page.

Topics:

In her ‘Creating Characters’ workshop Kate uses a range of improvisational games that encourage students to create characters, sketches and scenes from scratch.

These games encourage the students’ use of their imaginations in a supportive environment. Students explore a character’s physicality and voice, along with developing storytelling and narrative techniques.

The workshop looks at the relationships and status between characters, developing a three-act structure within their work and creating well-rounded characters.

At the end of the extended workshop the students will have developed character monologues and group sketches.

These tools can also be applied to pre-existing characters to enhance understanding in performance.
