Michael Camilleri: Comics, Storyboards, Picture Books: A Crash-Course

Session Info:

Kids and adults get straight into creating a story with their own drawings in this fast moving introduction to the language of picture-stories. But don’t worry, no skill is required!

The session draws on techniques and theory from film, comics and picture books, and has been developed from Michael’s professional experience in these fields. It is very simple, step-by-step and proceeds from the most basic principles.

For older students this is a good introduction to storyboarding for film, making comics and illustrating for picture books. The session can be enjoyed by younger students too, because it is also rather silly!

This session flows best when run for 90 minutes, as so much is covered!

Topics covered:
  • Telling a story with pictures – first principles
  • Creating an action
  • Making yourself understood by the reader
  • Creating drama
  • Introducing emotion
  • Introducing atmosphere
  • Editing
  • Testing the limits
