Nathaniel Eckstrom is a Sydney-based illustrator renowned for his vibrant and imaginative children’s picture books. His work is characterised by playful, dreamlike illustrations that resonate with warmth and energy, capturing the essence of childhood wonder.

Nathaniel has illustrated over 30 children’s books including ‘DUCK’ BY Meg McKinlay and ‘I Don’t Need a Little Brother’ by Nat Amoore. His illustrations have earned notable accolades, with several books being shortlisted for the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book of the Year Awards.

Where were you born?

I was born in Sydney, Australia and grew up about half an hour north of the city.

What other jobs have you had?

I’ve previously worked as a Graphic designer and Lecturer. Both were rewarding however my passion has always been in illustration and that’s what I’ve been working on for a long time.

What themes are recurring in your work?

A lot of books I’ve worked on carry common themes including friendships and inclusion, resilience and imagination. I love adding a touch of humour to my illustrations when I can.

What have been the highlights of your career?

A highlight for me was being asked to illustrate ‘The Happiest Boy on Earth’. A picture book version of Eddie Jaku’s Memoir. Also having several shortlisted and notable books in the CBCA Book of the Year Awards.

Where have your works been published?

Some of the books I’ve worked on have been published in the US, Italy, Germany and Spain to name a few.

It’s always a great feeling having works translated and distributed to a wider audience.

What are you passionate about?

My passions are drawing and guitar.
