Melanie Saward is a proud Bigambul and Wakka Wakka woman based in Tulmur (Ipswich), Queensland, a city west of Brisbane. An experienced university lecturer, Melanie loves to talk about her books and writing, and run practical writing workshops.

pataway (Burnie), lutruwita (Tasmania)

What other jobs have you had?

Editor, Doggy daycare dog handler, corporate writer and editor, marketer.

What themes are recurring in your work?

Aboriginal youth, justice, hope 

What have been the highlights of your career?

The day that Affirm Press had a zoom meeting and said they were going to publish Burn. All my dreams came true! 

Where have your works been published?

In addition to my books, I’ve had writing published in The Griffith Review, Meanjin, Overland, Kill Your Darlings. I’ve had short stories in two New Australian Fiction Anthologies, and Flock: First Nations Stories Then and Now.

What are you passionate about?

I’m passionate about books and writing, reading. I’m particularly passionate about getting books (any books!) into the hands of young Aboriginal boys and men. 

Haven’t I seen you before?

You’d probably remember me if you have. I have pink hair and am known for bright outfits themed to the occasion.
