Marcelo Baez
Comics, Entertainment, Illustrator, Inspirational Speaker
Marcelo is professional illustrator and creative facilitator based on the NSW South Coast. Working internationally and locally as an illustrator for over 27 years, and over 14 years as a creative facilitator and presenter.
He also teaches a large variety of drawing comics/character design/visual storytelling for kids as well as teaching a variety of creative adult workshops for the corporate and public sectors. He has been an invited guest to Supanova, OZ Comic con and Gamma Con.
Where were you born?
I was born in Santiago Chile, my parents immigrated here to Australia when I was 3.
What other jobs have you had?
I worked in an art shop when I was a teenager, so I knew a lot about art supplies! I graduated as a Graphic Designer in my 20s and left for the big smoke, working as a designer for a few studios and corporations.
What themes are recurring in your work?
Myth and Sci-fi. I’m obsessed with mythology and the universal themes of the human condition from different world cultures. Science fiction at a deeper level also explores future concepts for allegory of the human condition which I find fascinating.
What have been the highlights of your career?
I grew up reading lots of Marvel comics…so being chosen to draw for Marvel was mindblowing! I had been asked to create a series of Japanese woodblock style Avengers vs Loki prints. Then they asked me draw a Wolverine one as well! ( I love the X-men) More recently I’ve been honoured to work with best selling author Anh Do on his super fun Mythix and E-boy series.

In the USA, Australia and Europe.
What are you passionate about?
I love visual storytelling, and the power to tell amazing stories with pictures and words …especially comics. I’ve been so fortunate to be inspired by great comics, that I hope I can inspire the next generation of visual storytellers.
Haven’t I seen you before?
Well I’ve been on TV and radio promoting comics over the years for various comic shows and creative educational programmes… or maybe you saw me in a Mexican restaurant… I live for nachos.
Anything else you’d like to share with us?
I have a hilarious creative workshop where I can teach ANYONE… to draw like PIcasso. If you can hold a crayon I can teach you. LOL
