Lauren Burns OAM, Naturopath, Nutritionist, Herbalist (BHSc) Olympic Gold Medallist, Taekwondo Sydney 2000

Lauren Burns created sporting history by winning the first Olympic gold medal for Taekwondo when the sport made its debut at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The nation watched as Lauren’s victory brought the Australian public and Olympic crowd to its feet. Before her Olympic win, few people knew that Lauren had been 12 times Australian Champion and had achieved a string of international titles including numerous medals at world championship level.

Where were you born?

Melbourne, Australia.

What themes are recurring in your work?

Excitement, passion, hard work, strategy, planning and enjoying what you do!

What have been the highlights of your career?

Olympic gold medal at the Sydney Olympics, writing two books (a process I absolutely adored), achieving a Bachelor Health Science.

What are you passionate about?

I am passionate about anyone who is willing to follow what they love, step outside their comfort zone and seek enjoyment in what they enjoy.

Moving through the challenges, hard times and mistakes to learn, grow and develop as a person or advance a project.

I love food, cooking and preparing nourishing meals for people to enjoy. I also love ceramics and making functional pieces. It is so much nicer to eat off a handmade piece made by someone you know.

Lauren was terrific: she has a lovely relaxed style that appeals to the kids and still commands attention. Her message was spot on for us and she did really well to complement what we were doing with our program. She was at her best when she got the kids doing taekwando punches, breaking boards with their bare hands and asking questions. I wouldn’t hesitate to get her back at some stage.

Lauren was amazing. The response and impact she had was fantastic. I have had such positive feedback from the girls and the staff. She was motivating, inspiring and engaging.  I wish you could have seen the girls afterward swarming around to speak to her and have a photo!

Lauren Burns was the keynote speaker for the annual Casey Student Leaders Reception. This event brings together school captains from primary and secondary schools across the City of Casey, to congratulate them on their appointment and explore the idea of leadership. Lauren spoke well to the audience which had a broad age range, and her message was right on target. Her talk certainly inspired the idea that with vision, hard work and determination, you can achieve great things. Lauren had everyone feeling energised as she had them on their feet going through some Taekwondo moves. The board break and use of video were very engaging and added another element to her presentation. Lauren was very friendly, as well as being quite patient and generous with her time when it came to having photos and signing autographs after the official speeches concluded. We also couldn’t believe how willing she was to share her medal and have it passed around the theatre, creating much excitement for the students!
