Kate (left) is best known for her one-woman stage comedy show The Debutante Diaries. In the show Kate brings an entire school community to life as they plan their Year 11 debutante ball, pitting adult disaffection against teenage angst, with hilarious results.
I write a lot about family, a sense of belonging, adolescence, relationships and failure.
Winning the Best Comedy and Outstanding Newcomer awards and receiving a Melbourne Comedy Festival Barry Award nomination for my one-woman show The Debutante Diaries – along with touring the show nationally and to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
My stage shows have been performed in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Melbourne, Adelaide and Edinburgh fringe festivals. I have also written sketch comedy for television and worked as a story-line consultant for various TV narrative comedy projects.
I have appeared on the telly in Ben Elton’s Live From Planet Earth, Offspring, The Mansion, ‘Road to Gold’ sketches for the 2009 Logies broadcast, Vulture, Let Loose Live, Studio A, The Mutant Way, Stingers and MDA. I also record a comical football podcast called ‘The Downlow’.
I am passionate about story-telling, humour, family and have a secret love of yelling loud things out at football games.
I also work a lot as an animation voice over artist – most recently voicing the character of ‘Simone’ in the Logie and AFI nominated animation Dogstar.
I just wanted to provide some feedback about Kate McLennan – she was fantastic! Perfect presentation for our girls, her manner was really engaging and the whole thing was hilarious! We will definitely use her again.
The two successful women, in a hilarious and entertaining way, described their personal journeys of making their dreams come true. Like many of my friends, I feel the pressure of Year 12, and that the constant reminder to ‘be realistic’ forces us to forget our dreams. Their presentation however, made it clear that sticking to your dreams and making your own luck is crucial. Like the other 900 students watching, I can achieve what I want with passion, persistence and a smile.
The messages and value of the presentation were priceless. For me, it re-enforced the possibility of achieving my goals and ambitions in a way that those two accomplished women had done by imply having a natural spark and determination.
